When you go directly to the farmer you know what you getting, but what about in pubs, restaurants and other dinning areas? Well one in five samples from 40 pubs and restaurants in the south west of England proved to be foreign meat; makes you think doesn’t it?
If you were to buy something described as a “local meat”, how far would you think it had actually travelled? 5, maybe 10, miles? Well the BBC found that it could be more like thousands of miles.
In 20% of the tested pubs and restaurants, steak and beef was actually from humped zebu cattle which can only be found in dry and arid areas of the world.
Your local restaurant and pubs might be charging you the local premium for a foreign cheap meat and you’ll never know the difference. The law says butchers must be able to prove exactly where the meat they sell comes from, restaurants should have to do the same.
