Types of Diabetes

Filed under: Health — admin @ 5:56 pm

There are three main types of the disease diabetes mellitus: gestational diabetes (occurring in pregnant women), type1 and type2.

Gestational diabetes is similar to the second type of diabetes since it’s caused by insulin resistance, caused by the hormones generated by the body during pregnancy. This creates a need of abnormally high levels of insulin and results in diabetes when the beta cells are not able to satisfy this demand. Type 1 diabetes is usually an autoimmune disorder caused by resistance to insulin in the target tissues. All three types of diabetes occur because of malfunctioning of beta cells in the pancreas, because they are unable to secrete enough insulin to keep the blood sugar level at a normal level, resulting in hyperglyceamia.

Curing Diabetes

Filed under: Health — admin @ 10:11 am

Originally insulin was produced using natural sources like porcine pancreas, but most of the insulin nowadays is produced using genetic engineering: either copying human insulin directly, or human insulin which contains modified molecules which provides a different duration of action and time of onset in different patients. The second type of diabetes can be treated with a combination of tablets, injections and lifestyle adjustments. In this type, lifestyle adjustments like diet regulation and inclusion of exercise in the daily regime are needed to manage the blood sugar level. Diabetes of the first type is treated usually with an injection of insulin. It is also possible to administer insulin using a special pump which provides insulin subcutaneously through a catheter, which is changeable.

All types of diabetes are treatable with insulin which was made available medically in the year 1921. All types of diabetes are chronic disorders. While gestational diabetes is cured once the child is delivered, the first and second types of diabetes are chronic disorders.

Lose weight at home

Filed under: Health — admin @ 1:54 am

The majority of people don’t do any exercise. The most important factor is that you dedicate at least 50 minutes a day doing weight loss exercises at home. When you’re determined to lose weight, you can lose weight in your own home. You don’t have to travel a long distance to reach your local gym to lose weight.

Don’t spend hundreds of dollars a month at your ’sophisticated’ gym in order to lose weight.

Specialized stackable step mats are available within the market and you can use them at home for exercising. Walking is a common weight losing exercise and can be done wherever and whenever you want. Cardio exercises play major role in losing weight. These exercises increase your heartbeat tremendously and cause sweating, which is a good sign that you’re losing weight.

Jumping jacks or skipping are some of the best aerobic exercises. Weight is a key issue in the world of today so keep yourself fit.

The dangers of incubators?

Filed under: Health — admin @ 5:53 pm

Using an incubator creates an electromagnetic field in the area immediately surrounding the baby. The main job of the machine is to keep the air surrounding the baby warm. Many thousands of newborns need an incubator to help keep them healthy, some for many months after birth.

The natural switching of the heart rate is thought to be a good thing in adult patients with heart disease, there is no evidence, however, suggesting the same is true of babies. To see if incubators had any effect on the infant, the researchers from the University of Siena looked at “heart rate variability”: the natural switching up and down of the heart rate by the body.

They found that during the “switched on” periods, heart rate variability in the babies fell significantly, but they still don’t know if this is good/bad, leads to short term effects or if it even leads to long term damage. Guess we have no choice if the baby needs an incubator: it’s life or death.

Everyone gets free healthcare, but everyone shouldn’t

Filed under: Health — admin @ 5:53 pm

The Department of Health said those not entitled to free care should pay. But a third of overseas visitor managers polled by their association admitted patients were not routinely asked about their entitlement. Guidance published in 2004 stipulates hospitals should check whether foreign nationals are entitled to free care.

One of the many excuses given to justify the lack of procedure is that staff are scared of possible abuse, not only by overseas visitors, but also from people who feel it is unjust to be asked.

A confidential report for the Department of Health, released under the Freedom of Information Act last year, estimated that £30m was lost in un-recovered debts from foreign visitors in 2004. Some overseas visitor managers in hospitals told the BBC that they found the guidelines confusing and described how some staff are uncomfortable checking patients’ immigration status. Four years on, the Donal MacIntyre programme on Radio 5 Live has learned the rules are widely ignored.

And we wonder why the NHS is always in debt.

I’m A Mac & I’m A PC compilation UK Style

Filed under: Video — admin @ 5:45 pm

What we have here is the UK version of “I’m a Mac & I’m a PC.” Now I do not believe one word from most of these advertisements because they are quite misleading, however, they are still fun to watch.

Lose your face on Facebook

Filed under: Security, Site — admin @ 5:43 pm

Facebook says users should exercise caution when adding applications. But a malicious program, masquerading as a harmless application, could potentially harvest personal data. The popular social networking site allows users to add a variety of applications to their profile. Personal details of Facebook users could potentially be stolen, the BBC technology programme ‘Click’ has found.

Or at least that is the implication, and it also lets you keep your details private from the rest of the world. Facebook is the darling of the moment, allowing friends to stay in touch, post photos, and share fun little games and quizzes.

Facebook has said that any programs which violate their terms will be removed, but lets face it, millions of applications are added every minute by thousands of users, imagine how long it would take to go through them all.

BT gives out faster broad band, again!

Filed under: Business — admin @ 12:30 pm

The company could give no guarantee that customers would get the theoretical maximum 24Mbps speed promised by ADSL2+.

BT said ADSL2+ would reach a “potential footprint of 10 million homes and businesses by the spring of 2009″. “BT appear to have reverted to the sloth of the Home Highway period, rather than building upon their more recent successes in extending DSL’s UK availability so widely,” said Mr Fogg. Writing on his blog: “If this is BT’s 21st century network then those fibre to the home networks are for the 22nd century.” Some ISPs in the UK, such as Sky and O2, have already begun to offer ADSL2+ in the UK by deploying their own technology in exchanges.

Jupiter analyst Ian Fogg said the roll-out was “tardy” and available to “a tiny fraction” of UK households. I agree. I’m still stuck with 1mb broadband, when they will update my speed?!

Blu ray’s hopes didn’t go far

Filed under: Business — admin @ 5:41 pm

Any hopes Blu-ray had of some kind of giant sales increase due to the end of the format war with HD proved otherwise. One possibility that could be reached is that despite the format war being over and a winner being ‘crowned’, people still aren’t ready to ditch the traditional DVD in favour of the next-generation Blu-ray, why? Because they’re too damn expensive, maybe when the economy stabilises and the prices go down there might be a real increase in sales.

At least now the focus in terms of promotion and advertising the light can be placed upon one format, which might resonate better with the general public and slowly begin to sway them towards the new format. For me, the price needs to be halved before I’m swayed and I’m sure many people agree.

Adobe won’t be left behind

Filed under: Business — admin @ 5:40 pm

The company unveiled that top industry leaders, such as LG Electronics, Sony Ericsson, Toshiba, Motorola, Verizon Wireless and others are supporting the Open Screen Project, together with BBC, MTV Networks and NBC Universal.

Adobe will also be removing restrictions on the use of files in SWF and FLV format and will also publish detailed information about the inner workings of its Flash player and streaming Flash technologies (the Adobe Flash Cast protocol).

The Open Screen Project is meant to improve Internet experiences on television, personal computers, mobile devices and computer electronics, whilst removing licensing fees previously associated with mobile versions of Flash. Adobe has taken an aggressive step to ensure its Flash and AIR technologies are not left behind when it comes to mobile platforms.
